Strategy Director, Trends and Culture

In his role as Strategy Director, Trends and Culture, Chike Ume helps Essence's clients create compelling, relevant experiences grounded in insightful strategy and strong points of view.

Since first joining the agency as a senior creative strategist in 2016, Chike has played a key role in growing the agency's data-led experience practice. He is the founder of 'The Takeaway', a global thought leadership initiative at Essence designed to inspire culturally relevant, cutting edge thinking and creative work across the agency.

Prior to joining Essence, Chike worked as a strategic planner at at Razorfish, where he helped to shape strategy for brands including Xbox, Nike, Hulu, Netflix, and Tourism New Zealand. Chike began his career in communications with roles at Edelman and MSL Group. He served as VP of Public Relations for the Association of Black Business Students while studying at the University of Washington, from which he graduated with a BA in Law; Societies and Justice.

Based in Seattle, in his spare time Chike is a musician, spoken word artist, gamer, and higher learning activist.
